Research and Postgraduate Teaching

The focus of research in my research group is in three main areas:
1. Mechanisms of pathogenesis and vaccine development in human bacterial pathogens.
In this area we use genetic approaches to study the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions in pathogenic Neisseria and other respiratory pathogens such as Moraxella and Haemophilus.

2. Vaccines development for both human and veterinary bacterial pathogens.
In this area we have projects on several approaches to vaccine development in Neisseria meningitidis, the cause of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia. We also have projects on the development of new vaccines for important bacterial pathogens in the pig and poultry industries.

3. “Basic questions in bacterial genetics”
This work focuses on the analysis of whole bacterial genomes using studies “in silico” - bioinformatics. Current projects include studies on the role of rare codons in gene expression.
